I've never heard of them selling confiscated weapons. Some will be kept for reference purposes. As to the rest, I suppose it is possible one could be transferred to a museum or another LEO.

They can only confiscate the gun if you were breaking some law, like carrying it in the vehicle loaded, if not allowed in your state. They are allowed to secure the weapon until after the traffic stop is over if no gun laws were broken, but must return in after the traffic stop.
