A pressure switch
In most cases a brake light switch is of the normally open type when the brake pedal is operated this makes the switch a closed circuit which lets the current flow from the fuse to the vehicles brake lights On some older British vehicles the switch was in the brake line it was operated by the hydraulic pressure in the brake circuit when the pedal was operated
There is no safety switch that can be operated manually . The engine does however have a fuel cutoff switch integrated in to the oil pressure switch/sending unit that shuts off the fuel pump to protect the engine in case of loss of oil pressure.

More information needed: What make model vehicle is it? Early VW'S had a pressure operated brake light switch that was on the master cylinder. When you pressed the pedal the pressure would cause the switch contacts to close; lighting the brake lights. Haven't see one of them in a loooooong time!
