A lot will depend on the type of fouling and how much.

  1. Clean all external surfaces of grit, dirt and moisture.
  2. Insert a bore guide (if available) and soak a patch with copper solvent. Pass this through the barrel a number of times (breach to crown) until the patch appears clean.
  3. Leave the gun overnight with the barrel pointing down. (So that any residual solvent doesn't enter the mechanism).
  4. Soak another patch with solvent and push through the barrel a number of times. Check the barrel, if residue is still there you may need to use a copper brush - repeat from 2.
  5. Use a dry patch through the barrel - replacing the patch whenever it is dirty - again breach to crown.
  6. Once you have a clean patch showing from the barrel, wipe the crown and then clean the rest of the rifle using a silicon cloth for the exterior and a lightly lubricated patch on all metal surfaces.
  7. Apply a small amount of lubricant to the bolt and wipe dry, ditto any metal surfaces.

There are many different ways to clean a rifle, but this is the basic method.
