To clean a Marlin 00550 rifle, first ensure it's unloaded by checking the chamber and magazine. Use a cleaning rod with a bore brush and solvent to scrub the barrel, followed by a clean patch to remove residue. Wipe down the exterior with a soft cloth and apply a light coat of gun oil to protect the metal surfaces. Finally, inspect and clean any other components, such as the bolt and action, as needed.

Serial numbers were required per a 1968 firearms act. Marlin .22's produced prior to this were not required to have serial numbers stamped on the weapon and marlin decided it was not productive to do so. Although they did stamp some earlier models they discontinued the practice. My Marlin model 56 made in 1960 also has no serial number.
You clean the bore with brass and cloth 'pull throughs' and Hoppes fluid. Wipe the outside of metal lightly with an oily cloth and woodwork with a light wax.
To clean a Marlin 783, first ensure the firearm is unloaded and clear. Disassemble the rifle by removing the bolt, then clean the barrel with a solvent and a cleaning rod, using brushes and patches to remove fouling. Wipe down the action and stock with a cloth, applying gun oil to metal surfaces to prevent rust. Finally, reassemble the rifle and ensure it functions properly before storing.
