There is no one answer to your question. It will depend on the firearm. In the case of serially numbered firearms, SOME manufacturers have records showing when a given firearm was made, and if a manufacturer is still in business, an inquiry to their customer service department can often get an answer. Some, such as Remington, used a letter code stamped on the barrel. Some use other codes. And for some, there are simply no records or markings. Serial numbers were not required by law in the US until 1934 for handguns, and 1968 for rifles and shotguns. If you are seeking information on a specific firearm, post a question here giving a complete description including make, model and serial number, and we will try to get you an actual answer.
