You should check with the specific airline, but the basic rules are

1) have a hard sided, lockable (two locks) case

2) make sure the firearm is unloaded before you leave home

3) do not ship ammo in the firearm case (ammo shipment rules vary a great deal, so it is usually best to buy when you get to your destination)

4) keep the firearm in the case at all times

5) inform the ticketing agent that you have a firearm to declare

At this point the ticketing agent probably hand you an orange tag to fill out and will have security (usually a TSA agent) come over. Security will take you to an area where they will open the case, do a quick inspection, and then lock the case. It will then be checked through to your destination.

AT NO POINT ALLOW ANYONE EXCEPT SECURITY TO OPEN THE CASE!!
