One of the earliest forms of firearms, the matchlock used a length of smoldering cord (the slow match) to fire the weapon.
The match was typically large string treated to burn slowly, and was held in a metal clamp. When ready to fire, a pull of the trigger caused the metal clamp to swing down, pushing the slow burning string into a priming pan that holds a small quantity of gunpowder, lighting it. The flame from the powder flashes thru a very small hole in the barrel, igniting the main powder charge, and driving the bullet out of the barrel.
I think you mean "matchlock". This was a very early form of a firearm. It used a smoldering cloth string (the match) to ignite the gunpowder.
The Matchlock Gun was created in 1941.
IF theonly gun was a smoothbore matchlock pistol, you would think it was a pretty good gun. The WORST gun would have to be a gun that was unsafe to fire- any kind, any make, any caliber. If the gun is not safe to fire, then you have a pretty poorly designed club.If I had to choose between wheelock and matchlock I would put the matchlock at the bottom of the list only because of reliability, other than that I would agree with the first answer

The first weapon that worked like a pistol was the matchlock arm, used by Spanish armies in the late 15th Century. Wheel locks were then invented and the weapon was in common use by French armies by 1544. In 1836 the revolving pistol (revolver) as it now exists was patented by Samuel Colt of Connecticut.
