Not really possible to answer, since the question assumes registration of firearms. In MOST of the United States, there is no requirement for registration of firearms (No matter what they show on TV). The exception are weapons such as machine guns, short barreled rifles, short barreled shotguns, etc. These have been required to be registered with the Federal BATFE since 1934. For machine guns, there has been ONE murder committed with a registered firearm since 1934. That case involved a police officer that was convicted of murdering his wife.
