This is actually a Savage Model 620A. If it was hand-checkered, I doubt if it was done at the factory. The 620A was used as a trench and riot gun by U.S. troops during WW II and later. Law enforcement also used it as a riot gun. The 16 ga. Wards Western Field mod. 60 (Savage 620A) I have also has hand checkering.
