The hammer has changed over time to become more specialised. There are now hammers for many kinds of jobs from tacking furniture brads to pounding dents out of auto panels. I have at least 8 different hammers and my local tool store has an entire aisle dedicated to hammers. They have at least 30 different types.

When a hammer hits a nail, the kinetic energy of the hammer is transferred to the nail, causing it to move. Some of the kinetic energy is also transformed into sound and heat energy due to the collision.
The design of the hammer has evolved over time to include various features for usability and efficiency. Modern hammers have ergonomic handles for improved grip and shock absorption. There are also specialized hammers for different tasks, such as framing hammers for construction and ball-peen hammers for metalwork.

Early model (pre 1973, if I recall) Ruger single action REVOLVERS could fire if the hammer was struck, or the weapon dropped onto the hammer, and the hammer was resting on a loaded chamber. Ruger implemented a voluntary recall, and installed a hammer block to prevent this from happening. The design was changed to a transfer bar system that will not fire when hammer is struck. FWIW, the old style single action revolvers from MOST makers would do that- best practice was to keep hammer resting on an empty chamber. Do not know of a problem with ADs from their PISTOLS, just the revolvers.
