As said, a 30-06 is capable of shooting much further than you can accurately aim a firearm. My suggestion for a beginning hunter is to use a 5 inch paper desert plate as a target. That plate is about the size of the vital area of a deer. The distance at which you can hold ALL your shots on that 5 inch plate is your limit. Remember you are probably shooting from a standing position. For most hunters, that distance will max out at about 150- 200 yards. Beyond that you will probably wound an animal. An ethical hunter does not take shots that will not humanely take the animal.
