In the United States, a working bazooka / RPG/ Panzerfaust/ anti-armor weapon / Light Armor Weapon is a special type of firearm called a "destructive device." There are special laws that apply to those kinds of firearms that do no apply to ordinary firearms.

By design, a bazooka is a type of firearm because it throws a projectile forward by means of exploding or rapidly burning material. But unlike a regular firearm, the bazooka is not a closed container where the only way for the high-pressure gasses to escape is to push the bullet or shell down the barrel. A bazooka is more like a rocket that is launched from a thin hollow tube. The tube helps aim the rocket and protects the user from getting burned by the rocket's exhaust.
