Your best bet would be to take it to a gunsmith for a professional appraisal.
yes your Stevens shotgun should be safe to shoot,I'm not saying run nitro mags in it but it should function fine with high brass game loads.....they are a well built shotgun designed by John Browning..if your ever looking to sell it i'd be interested..........kyledeno@yahoo.com

I would advis you to have a competent gunsmith look your shotgun over first to see if it will fire safely.He can also advise you as to the length of chamber you have.I would only shoot the low brass shells in this shotgun.
When in doubt have a qualified gunsmith examine your Marlin model 21 shotgun.It is far cheaper to have it examined,then to loose your eye sight or worse.
