To determine the age of your Winchester 1897 shotgun, you'll need to look up the serial number against production records. Winchester manufactured the Model 1897 from 1897 until 1957, so the serial number can help pinpoint the year it was made. You can find resources online or consult a firearms expert for specific information based on the serial number.
Depends on the serial number... Look up Winchester serial numbers..
I posted a hotlink under the "related links" heading below. It's a database where you can submit the model and serial numbers and look up the date of manufacture.
If you have a common shotgun made before 1968, there probably is no serial number to look up. If the serial number is not on the receiver some where; i.e., water table, side, bottom, somewhere; then it doesn't have one & that is as far as you can take the serial number of a shotgun made before 1968.

To determine the age of a Winchester firearm, including those with a specific serial number, you would typically refer to the Winchester serial number records, which provide year of manufacture based on the serial number. The serial number itself can give insights into when the gun was produced. If you have the specific serial number, you can look it up in historical references or databases dedicated to Winchester firearms to find its date of manufacture.
