30th edition Gun Trader's Guide says 1959-65, and 60-69 for a model 57M
I have new replacement magazines for the Winchester Model 57. sales@countrygunsmith.net
Gun Trader's Guide, 30th edition states $220 in excellent condition for a model 57 .22 cal levermatic Rifle.
My guess is that it is the serial number. The model 56 was the first of the Marlin "Levermatic" line of guns that featured a clip magazine and a very short throw lever that allowed the shooter to cycle rounds through the gun more quickly than a standard lever action rifle. From it came the Model 57 and 57M which were tubular magazines of the same gun and the model 62 which were .256 win. mag and .30 carbine versions of the "Levermatic".
This bolt is the same one used in the Winchester model 57, 69 and 75 rifles.
model 57 22 cal was made from 1959-1965. the model 57 mag was made from 1960-69.
It is a Marlin Levermatic model 56 made for Sears, Roebuck & Co. (J.C. Higgins) by Marlin. They came in tube fed or with a 10 round clip. Mfg. date starting in 1956 to 1960 when it became the Model 57 discontinued in 1964. I have seen them listed upwards of 700 dollars in pristine condition. Its main feature is its short throw lever. Only 2 1/2 inches. It is an excellent gun. Hang on to it.
Your Winchester model 57 was made sometime in the year 1928.Winchester made only 19,281 model 57,s from 1926-1938.
