The forward assist on an AR-15/M-16 style rifle forces the bolt forward. When you push the forward assist, it pushes against notches in the bolt carrier, which force the bolt to move forward and lock into the barrel extension even harder than it already is. It's used to silently close the bolt securely, and to make sure the bolt is in battery.
Position the front portion of the bolt with the "flat" portion of the bolt facing the ground. Insert the bolt into the breach end of the gun until it stops. Push the safety forward until you feel the retainer pin in the throat of the breach move down. Push the bolt further forward and then move the bolt up and down slightly while continuing to push gently forward until the bolt goes into position. To remove the bolt, lift the bolt handle, pull it back, push the safety forward until the bolt is released as you gently pull the bolt back.
To release the bolt on a Remington Rangemaster model, first ensure the firearm is unloaded and pointed in a safe direction. Locate the bolt release lever, usually situated on the left side of the receiver. Press the lever down while pulling the bolt to the rear, allowing it to disengage from the receiver. Once fully retracted, the bolt can be removed from the firearm.
A Remington Model 760 magazine "CAN" be used in the Model 742 Remington if they are the same caliber. The 742 rifle is designed to hold the bolt back after the last round is fired. Along the left side of the 742 magazine there is a bolt release button that will allow the bolt to move forward after a full mag. replaces the empty one. The 760 mag. has the same magazine body but does not have the bolt release button so the bolt will not move forward until the mag. is removed.
Put the safety in the off position when aligning the bolt up with the receiver. Preass on the bolt release on the left side of the gun and slide bolt forward. Below is the link to the owners manual for the Browning A-bolt. Recommend downloading it for future reference. Page 6 has the instructions with photos to show how to install bolt.
the safety switch, just behind the breach, next to the bolt, doubles as the bolt-release. with the gun unloaded, pull the bolt back and push the safety switch forward past the "fire" position. the bolt should then be released so that you can easily pull it out of the back of the gun.
