Not a very well defined term. It could refer to the caliber, with anything .32 caliber and smaller being considered small, or it could refer to the frame size. i have a S&W Mdl 36 revolver (2 inch bbl) that is considered a small handgun, and a Model 14 (6 inch bbl) that is a large- they are both .38 Special.
FN made several models of 'small handgun.' Would need to know caliber, at least.
Depends on WHICH handgun. I have one very small 22 revolver that has an overall length of 4 inches- and a large .357 magnum with an overall length of 16 inches.

You have to push in the firing pin on the back and slide the assembly forward. Once the assembly moves forward the top of the gun should lift off. Be careful, there are lots of small pieces and springs inside.
Walther, Colt, Ruger and S&W are good places to start.
The DANTON 25 caliber automatic pistol is a compact semi-automatic handgun known for its small size, making it suitable for concealed carry. It typically features a blowback action and is chambered for .25 ACP ammunition, which is often used for self-defense in close quarters. The design is straightforward, often incorporating a fixed barrel and a simple safety mechanism. While it may not be the most powerful choice, its lightweight and ease of use appeal to certain shooters.
If you're asking when were handguns first made, the answer is the 1400s. The first handguns were basically small hand-cannons.
