if the sears vendor code begins with 101 it is in fact a Stevens gun . but if it i marked 583 it is a House brand made by sears (sears owned high standard) in thouse days who made the model 10 and 11 bolt action shotgun wich is probably what you have they are usually marked 583 21 in the model 10 s case and 583 1100 or 583 1101 0r 583 1102 at any rate any gun marked J C Higgins is at least 45 years old
