There are several small pins that connect the lever to armatures inside the gun. Check to see if all the linkages are connected to each other. These pins can come loose or break, but that's pretty rare.
If you've watched one too may John Wayne movies and decided to try your hand at "twirling" the gun by the lever to cock it, you've probably broken one of the armatures or sheared off one of the pins.
Your best bet is to take it to a real gun smith. What ever he charges may sound like a lot of money, but it's way cheaper than an artificial hand or a glass eye.
