Serial number 617,xxx Springfield model 1903 rifle was made in 1915 (1915 serial numbers were 595,601 to 660,121), the cartridge is a 30-06 Springfield (M1906). The original cartridge for the '03 was the 30-03 (.30 caliber, designed in 1903 and used a 220 grain bullet). In 1906 the army adopted the spitzer style bullet, reducing the weight of the bullet to 150 grains; the new cartridge became the 30-06. All '03's after 1906 were made for the 30-06. Note: The Springfield model 1903 rifle with serial numbers under 800,000 might have been made with improper heat treatment of the receiver (refered to as low numbers) and could shatter under firing pressure, causing injury.
