Never that's probably the patent date, I suspect your talking about a (maybe a number 1) rolling block? I believe they were made as late as 1909.

25-20 is a caliber, not a model number. If the gun is a lever action, it's probably a model 1892, which were made up until WW2. In that caliber, it's probably from the early 1900's. If you go to: http://armscollectors.com/sn/windates.htm select the proper model number and enter the serial number, it will give you the date the gun was made.

Several rifles were made in .25-20 caliber. The manufacturer and model number need to be identified as well as the serial to determine the date of manufacture.

First, your Model 1892 was not made in the year 1884. The Model 1892 was introduced late in the year 1892. The serial number located on the bottom forward edge of the receiver frame will tell us when it was actually made. The "1884" date you found on the gun is the Patent date (John M. Browning invented & patented it). The collector value of your Model 1892 can only be assessed by a visual inspection & evaluation. Old Winchesters are very much like old classic automobiles... the graded condition and factory originality are the key factors in determining what they are truly worth.
