To tune a revolver, you must do a complete tear down. The springs must be replaced and many of the surfaces that meet must be polished to a smoother finish. This will bring the single action trigger pull (when you pull the hammer back prior to firing) from the range of 4 - 6 pounds down to 1- 3 pounds of force.

This is typically done so that the user doesn't pull the barrel down as they pull the trigger (it helps keep the sights aligned through the entire shot). A good gunsmith can do this for just about any modern revolver, and there are many instructional videos and spring kits sold online for some of the more popular revolvers (Ruger and Smith&Wesson).

MidwayUSA even sells a video on how to tune a S&W revolver.
