When the barrel first becomes hot, the steel will want to go back to it's original shape after milling and rifling at the factory. Think of bending a branch, when you let it go it returns to it's original shape. This will only be temporary if we're only talking about a few shots. If the gun is allowed to cool, it will return to factory dimensions. If fired until extreme heat is generated, the barrel will lose hardness and become damaged by continued firing. At that point, the barrel will have to be replaced.
