Single action revolver requires that you cock the hammer with your thumb prior to pulling the trigger to fire (think any old western with John Wayne).

Double action revolver requires only that you pull the trigger - the long trigger pull cocks the hammer and drops it when the sear trips but reduces accuracy (think any Hawaii 5-O episode when McGarrett is firing his pistol).

There are single action auto loading pistols and double action only auto loading pistols AND double/ single action auto loading pistols too.

Three examples in respective order are: Colt model 1911 (just about any John Wayne WWII movie) Beretta Cougar DAO (sorry no movie) and Beretta 92 (Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapon and our current standard US Military sidearm).

Difference between Single action and double action pistols?

Single action means that each action must be performed individually, like cocking the hammer then pulling to trigger to fire. Double action is when pulling the trigger performs both these actions at once.

What is the difference between a single action pistol and a double action?

A single action pisstol, such as the Colt 1911, requires that the hammer be manually cocked before firing the first shot. Double action pistols, such as the P38, do not- pulling the trigger will cause the hammer to rise and fall, without being manually cocked. This also applies to single action revolvers, such as the Colt Peacemaker, and the double action S&W Model 66 Combat Masterpiece.

How many types of hand guns are there?

Hundreds. They are generally separated into revolvers and pistols (anything not a revolver) But then it becomes complex. There are different types of revolvers, such as single action, double action, top break, tip up, swing out cylinder, etc. There are single shot pistols that are top break, and bolt action. There are double and single action pistols, and even fully automatic (machine pistols). There are shotgun pistols, small caliber pistols, ones that will fit in a vest pocket, and some that have scopes and a bipod. There are antique black powder pistols and revolvers, and pistols with frames made of plastic type polymers. The study of firearms is a VERY broad subject.

Does the Smith and Wesson auto function in double action only mode?

Specifically no. Most Smith & Wesson pistol models are both double and single action, meaning that they may be cocked for single action and also operated by trigger pull alone in double action. However some Smith & Wesson automatic pistols are double action only (DAO) and are designed for double action alone. These pistols may not be cocked and are operated by a long trigger pull.

What's the difference between Double action and Semi-automatic?

There are effectively three types of pistols. Automatic pistols (MAC-10), Semi-automatic pistols (Glocks, Luger, Sig), and revolvers. There are several types of actions (the mechanism by which shells are loaded into the chamber, the hammer is cocked and released). Single action and double action. There are variants and hybrids of the single and double action systems.A double action in a revolver rotates the cylinder bringing another chamber into alignment with the barrel and cocks the hammer. Generally the trigger pull in a double action requires significantly more force than in a single action.A single action in a revolver simply releases the hammer which causes the firing pin to strike the primer of the shell in the chamber, if there is no shell present a dry fire occurs. In a semi-automatic a double action both cocks and releases the hammer. In a semi-automatic a single action only releases the hammer, however when the round in the chamber is fired the hammer is cocked for the next round. Only the first round fired requires the hammer to be manually cocked.
