There are more than a dozen different .38 caliber cartridges. Most of them are obsolete- however, there are 2 that are still fairly common. The one that may be called a .38 Short (incorrectly, but they do get called that) is the .38 S&W. This is shorter and fatter than the .38 Special cartridge, and does not interchange with it.
Colt .38 New Police was the Colt name for .38 S&W. Same ammo.
.38 Special. It can also fire .38 Short Colt and .38 Long Colt. Do not attempt to fire .38 S&W from a .38 Special.
38 caliber revolver ammo
Yes, you can use .38 ammo in a .38 Special firearm as they are compatible with each other.

.38 special Stay away from the "+P" ammo
Any .38 ammo can be safly fired in a .357. +P .38 loads do not exceed .357 pressures.
No, and you shouldn't even use. 38 Special ammo in it, either. If it was made in the 1800s, it was probably chambered in .38 Long Colt, and that is the only ammo which is compatible with that revolver.
.38 Special, .38 Long Colt, .38 Short Colt. .38 S&W CANNOT be used in a .38 Special. .38 Special can be fired from a .357 Magnum weapon, but .357 Magnum cannot be fired from a .38 Special weapon.
No, i asume you dont have see .380 pistol and a revolver 38 spl, the .380 and 38 spl ammo share de same diameter boot no the longer, the 38 is for a 38 special revolver tipe and the .380 is for an automatic pistol tipe some people call 9mm short.
