Routledge bore is a smooth bore for 22 rimfire rifles. It is most likely named after the person who originally came up with this type of bore. The barrel is smooth bored after the chamber at 22 caliber bore . Then appr 14 inches from the muzzle it spreads out to about.410 all the way out to the muzzle. Looking at the muzzle end it appears to be a mini shotgun. These rifles were made to fire 22 rimfire shot cartridges and were generally used for pest control or shooting at mini clay birds or crackers.

What is the difference between a Routledge Bore and Smoothbore Remington 22 cal rifle?

The Routledge Bore is an invention by Fred Routledge which consisted of the last 12"-17" of the barrel of a .22 bored to about 3/8" or .375" . This allows the tiny .22 shot payload to stop spinning from the rifling or in a fully smooth bore .22 to open smoothly in a sort of jug choke effect. The effect of the Routledge bore was to enable the .22 Shot cartridge to be effective at 15 yards or so on vermin, about 4 times farther than a .22 rifled barrel is able to deliver a useful pattern of it's tiny shot.

Is a 223 bore the same width as a 22 bore?

No, a .223 bore and a .22 bore are not the same width. The .223 Remington cartridge has a bullet diameter of approximately 0.224 inches, while the .22 caliber typically refers to a bullet diameter of 0.223 inches. While they are very close in size, the .223 is slightly larger than the traditional .22 caliber bullets, which include .22 Long Rifle and others.

Where can you find information on a Rutledge barrel?

If you mean the .22 caliber shotgun barrel, it is spelled Routledge. During the 1930s, mini-skeet programs utilzing small clay targets were promoted by several firms. One such program was offered by the Routledge Manufacturing Co. of Monroe Mich. In April. 1937 Fred Routledge of that firm applied to the US patent Office for a patent on an invention that "relates to training equipment for skill in marksmanship" His patent application noted the use of a counterbored smoothbore barrel. The cal .22 portion of the bore at the breech end spanned about one-half the length of the barrel. The remaining 12 or 13 inches of the barrel was about 0.40" in diameter. In US patent no. 2,185,523 granted to Routledge on Jan 2, 1940, this counterbored barrel section was claimed to control the pattern of a standard cal .22 long rifle shot cartridge (containing at least 120 #12 pellets) so that 85% of the pellets would strike within a 6" circle at 33 feet.Between 1945 & 1955 inclusive, Remington produced 2,653 model 121 Fieldmasters and 2,118 model 510 bolt-action single-shot smoothbore guns under the Routledge patent. Also produced by Remington for the Routledge firm were 5,557 model 514 bolt-action single-shot and 3,991 model 572 slide-action rifles with STANDARD (not Routledge) smoothbore barrels. The above info is from an article that appeared in the November, 1974 issue of American Rifleman.
