Can anyone help me I have a Marlin rifle with serial number dl278 3 stamped 1894 made in Italy also stamped terni Tubata is circular stamped around Terni need to know what ammo I can shoot?
I am not sure why you feel this rifle is a Marlin- is it marked Marlin anywhere on the rifle? Can you describe the rifle- bolt action, single shot, etc? Terni was one of the Italian military arsenals, and is marked on MANY Italian military firearms. Tubata is a marking I have found on a number of Italian rifles that have been "sleeved"- a bad or obsolete bore is drilled out, and a sleeve inserted permanently, providing a new bore. This is known as the "Tubata" process. If Italian military, these were made in at least 4 different cartridges at different times. To determine which cartridge your rifle is chambered for, and IF it is safe to shoot (some of the wartime conversions were done in desperation, and may NOT be safe to shoot) you need to take your rifle to a good gunsmith. He may need to make a casting of the chamber using a product called cerrosafe to see what the shape and measurements of the chamber really are. This is generally not a very expensive job- and a very good safety measure.
How would you find the correct caliber for a Marlin Model 1893 serial 203475 with an octagonal barrel if it does not have the caliber stamped on top of the barrel?
That is a bit problematic. This model was rollmarked with the caliber designation on the top of the barrel immediately forward of the receiver. The other barrel markings should be: MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. NEW-HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. PATENTED.OCT.11.1887.APRIL 2.1889.AUG.1.1893 It is possible that your original barrel has been replaced, or perhaps the gun has been heavily refinished with markings obliterated during polishing. Either way is bad news. If you do not find the caliber markings, the only way to truly tell what caliber it is would be to have a gunsmith make a chamber cast. The original calibers offered in that model were .25/36 Marlin, .30/30, .32 Special, .32/40 and .38/55, however if the barrel has been replaced it might be chambered differently. If you can send some good clear digital photos of the gun, especially of any markings on the gun, we can tell immediately if the barrel is original and/or has been refinished. sales@countrygunsmith.net Calibers on these early Marlins are often faintly marked just in front of the frame, on top of the barrel. You will need a magnifying glass to read it. If it indeed wont show, then you need a gunsmith to check the chamber with gauges or a chamber casting of Cerrosafe.
