I have a 20 ga with a serial number within 800 of the serial number listed of 19067. The way to date this is by the letter in front of the serial number. On my shotgun the letter is C. C = 1951, B =1950 and A=1949. Stevens began the lettering system in 1949. Since my shotgun is within 800 I would expect the shotgun listed should have a letter assigned to it. If not then the shotgun is made prior to 1949. I would also like to know the value mine is in exc condition and has nil wear on the lock I have not found the model 5000 listed in any of the gun catalogs or trader magazines. The Model 5000 was made circa 1921-1931. About 1931 the model number was changed to 5100 and about 1941 it was changed to 311. Most references consider all three to be the 311. The letter code mentioned in the previous answer was marked with a number and a letter in a circle on the bottom of the frame between the trigger guard and the hinge.

The Springfield name was used starting about 1915 until the late 1940's. From 1916 to 1920, the plant was used to manufacture Mosin-Nagant rifles for the Russian military and no Stevens firearms were produced. In 1920 the company was purchased by Savage Arms and production of the Stevens trade names, including Riverside and Springfield, was resumed.

How do you tell how old and what type a J Stevens shotgun is if it is marked J Stevens Springfield and has the number 147k on the receiver under the barrel?

There have been several variations of the company name, but never just "J Stevens". The "Springfield" name was used from 1920 until about 1948 and during this time the company was called J. Stevens Arms Co. The type is determined by looking at the gun: single shot, double barrel, pump, etc. The gauge, if not marked on the barrel, can be determined by measuring the chamber. 147K MAY be the model number. I have not found this model listed in any of my references, however if it is a single shot or double barrel, few models differ significantly from others, so many are not listed individually.
