It depends on the model and how well taken care of the firearm is. I collect Stevens shotguns, so very few are worth more than a 300 dollars. Most doubles side by side in any gauge that are in good shape usually go for around that. The model 240 over under .410 is worth about 500 dollars if is in great condition. All other singles are around 100-175 dollars. This should anwer your question. If you need to find out more go to gun auctions such as gunbroker.com and auctionarms.com.
Probably turn of the century
The Stevens model 311 was discontinued in the year 1989.You would have to contact Savage/Stevens to get the actual age of your double barrel shotgun.
Depends on age and condition.
The exact value of a J Stevens double barrel 16 gauge shotgun would actually depend on a couple different things. Some of these things would include the age and condition of the shotgun.
STEVENS / SAVAGE HAVE A COLLECTORS SITE GOOGLE IT
I believe that this series of shotgun was made starting in the 1990,s and made up to about 2005.

I can say that your shotgun being marked with J Stevens Arms and Tool Co.indicates that it was made from 1886-1916.That marking was only used during these years of production.
Blue Book of Gun Values will help.

Old catalogs, old gun books.
I can say that the marking stevens Arms and Tool company was marked on stevens made firearms from 1886-1915.This time period would include your double barrel shotgun. As to value that would dpend on your shotgun having steel barrel or Damascus twist steel barrel(BLACKPOWDER ONLY).The ovreall condition would also be important.
