It's difficult to answer that question, because a gun that works for one person may not work for another person. You need to find a gun that fits your hand and that you can shoot accurately. Besides that, you need that that is effective, however, people argue all day long about what is effective and what isn't.

Ones mind is the primary self-defense tool. Use your ability to think, be aware, look, listen, and be familiar with common methods of attack.
I would NOT recommend any weapon, lethal or nonlethal, used for self-defense, which you are not familiar with, have practiced with, are prepared to use fully, or understand the legal ramifications for their use.
Remember, which ever weapon you choose for self defense it can be used against you, not dogs usually. A bat can be taken away from you and a gun or knife can be turned against you.
Small calibre ammunition is fine, but it may not stop an attacker immediately. Ballistic science enforces small calibre, .22 or .32, ammunition may bounce around in a person if it penetrates them at all. I would suggest ammunition commonly used by law enforcement, 9mm, 40 cal, 45 cal, or 38 cal, of a hollow point variety. But since we are talking about firearms for defense there is nothing better than a shotgun. Just racking a round into the chamber could stop an aggressor.
Any purchase of a firearm to be used in defending ones self should also consider training in how to fire the weapon, draw the weapon, function the weapon when it malfunctions, firring at night or in low light situations, and the legal ramifications of its use (cant reiterate that enough).
What ever you choose, choose wisely and consult an expert before you make any final purchases.
Depends what your using it for hunting is the 12 gauge pump shotgun for home defense handgun
While something is better then nothing, this caliber is pretty weak as a home defense handgun. The minimum considered home defense handgun is the .380 auto caliber. The larger the caliber the better for home defense. Please consider that it is just as important that you shoot whatever you can handle recoil wise with accuracy.
A minor can possess a handgun under certain circumstances, such as target shooting, or defense inside the home. See this link for more information:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_Control_Act_of_1968
That will require a miracle- or a change of government. Canadian law does not recognize defense as justification for a handgun license. The laws are far too broad a subject to cover here, but this link does: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_politics_in_Canada
Generally speaking, no. A minor, by federal law, can only possess a handgun under limited circumstances, such as target shooting or hunting. If the minor is in his or her own home and uses a gun for self defense from an intruder, in most states, there will be no problem.
There is no best gun because it depends on too many factors. The best gun for you is whichever gun that fits your hand the best so you can shoot it accurately. Beyond that, a gun for everyday carry must be reliable and be of an adequate caliber for self defense.
