Properly called a "straw man purchase". This is where person A buys a gun for person B. Person A, who completes the paperwork, has background check, etc, is not the actual purchaser of the weapon. They are a "straw man"- a fake. In most of the US, it is legal to buy a gun as a bonafide gift to another- but not to use another's money to buy a gun for them. Example- Using my money, I buy a gun as a Christmas present for my son, who is legally able to own a gun. That is legal, and not a straw man sale. My neighbor asks if I will get a gun for him. He gives me $300, I go buy a gun, and take it to him. THAT is a strawman sale, and illegal- even if my neighbor could have legally bought the gun himself.
