What is the value of a Smith and Wesson General Patton special edition 357?

These were issued by the American Historical Foundation and were embellished S&W 586 revolvers. There were two editions, the 'Collectors Edition' which was a blue 586 with nickel cylinder, cased with accessories, that was offered at $995 (1996), and the 'Deluxe Edition' which had about 80% engraving on a full nickel gun offered at $2495 (1996). In my opinion, it is unfortunate that AHF chose the L-frame revolver as a base for a Patton commemorative S&W. Patton's actual S&W revolver was a pre-Model 27, then called just the '.357 Magnum,' shipped to him in 1935. This of course is an N-frame revolver with very different looks and feel than the L-frame. Why AHF did not use 3 1/2" barrelled Model 27's is beyond me. There are a great many Patton commemorative firearms on the market, from actual embellished Colt SAA's, to Uberti clones, to Walther PP's. We have not found any of the S&W revolvers for sale, recently, however. Assuming you have ALL the accessories, the case and so forth, and assuming the gun has never been fired and is still pristine-new (without cylinder drag line from working the action, etc), it might hold it's original issue price IF you find the right buyer. If any of the accessories or the case is missing, and especially if the gun has been fired, you can expect the value to lower by 50% or more. sales@countrygunsmith.net
