This question needs more information. What model is the gun? what condition is it in? Excellent, good, fair, poor.
1954 to 1968
I don't believe Crosman ever made a model 40 rifle. I have no reverence to any model by that number made by Crosman. However they did make a model 140 from 1954 to 1968 in four variations.
Birth date: January 21, 1824 Death: May 10, 1863
There might be a date of manufacture on it. If there isn't, someone knowledgeable about guns might be able to tell you when it was manufactured. New Answer------------------- There are a few ways to get an answer to the date of your air gun. You can ask here in "Answers. com." Give the model number. Name on the air gun and the serial number. State who made the air gun. ie Daisy, Gamo, Crosman Benjamin or whoever. This is a place to start. Make sure your question is placed in the "Air gun and Air rifle" category so I can find it. Or Locate a "bluebook of airguns" at a book store. There you will find almost all the answers to your question. If your air gun is a Crosman, then Crosman has a web page to date your air gun. In fact you can write to most manufactures and ask them directly. most all of them have a web page with a contact link.

Crosman has been marketing targets for a very long time. several of their original Air pistols came with targets in the package. This goes back to sometime in the 1940's and maybe before that. I don't have an exact date.

All I can tell you about this gun (Pistol) is it was made by Crosman. The (126) at the beginning of the model indicate Crosman. Unfortunately the Crossover list form Sears to Crosman is long gone and only a few of the numbers are known. Here is what I suggest. Crosman has a list of most all their Air guns / rifles. The list has the Owners Manuals, Parts List and date of Manufacture listed. See the link below for this web site
it was made between 1950 -54. The serial numbed would help identify it to a specific date.
