Somebody may be able to prove me wrong on this, but I believe that WW1 era snipers used the long barreled version of the M1903 Springfield rather then the 1917 which was an infantry weapon.
If you wanted something that looked proper for the era, you'd need a mount for the scope that attached to the side of the action and stood tall enough so you could still load it, and the scope would traditionally be fairly compact without the big "bell" shaped optics up front.
