Caliber (or caliber for the British spelling) can be defined 2 ways. As a whole number (such as a 3 inch 50 caliber gun) it is a ship's gun that has a barrel 50 times as long as the bore diameter- or a 150 inch barrel. The more common use as a fraction (such as .357 or .45) is the diameter of the inside of the barrel in decimal parts of an inch. A .308 rifle has an inside the barrel measurement of about .308 inches. Commonly called a .308 caliber rifle.
