The M18A1 Claymore is used primarily as a defensive weapon. It is normally command detonated (a soldier makes it explode at the moment he wants it to explode) It may be used as part of a defensive perimeter, along with wire and other obstacles. It has the effect of a giant shotgun, firing steel pellets in a pattern to its front.
The Claymore may also be used in offensive operations, such as an ambush. During hours of darkness, firing a rifle marks the location of the shooter, but detonating a Claymore does not. They have been used to initiate an ambush, causing the first casualties, and signaling other members of the ambush to open fire.
They have also been used as part of a "mechanical ambush", or mine field. In this instance, the command detonation is replaced by a tripwire detonator, and does not require personnel to be present for the mine to fire. When used in this fashion, US doctrine requires that the Claymores so employed by recorded as a minefield.
The term 'M18' can be used to refer to a few different firearms and military equipment. In firearme, M18 can be used to refer to the M18 Claymore and the M18 recoilless rifle from late World War 2. In military equipment, M18 can be used to refer to the M18 Hellcat tank and AN M18 which is a colored smoke grenade.
