The American M-1 Garand was designed by John C. Garand at the Springfield Arms factory in Springfield Massachussetts in 1932, and adopted as the U.S. army's standard infantry rifle in 1936 to replace the Springfield M1903 rifle. The M1 went out of service as the .U.S.'s standard infantry rifle in 1957 when it was replaced by the selective-fire M-14. Although the Garand went out of service in 1957, it was used in small numbers until 1967 and to this day is used by drilling teams and military honor guards.
