To help identify the model try going to Google and entering Iver Johnson You will find several FAQ pages and they will help you in making an model id a previous answer said there were a million 38s made between 1897 and 1908 so all the info you can provide will make the answer more accurate Another source of information on this firearm (and most other Iver Johnson firearms) is the book by W.E. Goforth titled, "Iver-Johnson Arms & Cycle Works Firearms 1871-1993".
