the katana originated in china before the 8th Century AD, and in the 9th-10th Centuries AD, had made its way to Japan, in the period known as Joko-to.

the sword at this time was a straight, single edged blade. But by around the year 980AD however, in the Heian period, the Katana's distinctive curved shape began to appear, and created the shape which all subsequent katana types copied for close on 900 years, with gradual changes in some periods - the swords of the early edo period (around 1650AD), for example, were often almost straight, while those in the muromachi period (around 1400AD) were particularly curved.
