The Mossberg 500 with serial number J943756 was manufactured in the early 1990s. Mossberg typically uses a letter prefix followed by a series of numbers to indicate the year of production, with "J" generally corresponding to the years around 1991-1992. For specific confirmation, consulting Mossberg's manufacturing records or a firearms expert would provide the most accurate date.
Yes, it is a Mossberg 500. However, parts only interchange with a model 500 from the same serial sequence, i.e. if you have a G, H, or J serial number, it will only interchange with an older G, H, or J serial number. Source: National Mossberg Collector's Association at www.havlinsales.com

Mossberg made Westernfield shotguns and rifles for department stores. My Westernfield shotgun is identical to a Mossberg 500.
I own a Western field 12 ga (serial no g613481) that I purchased from Montgomery Wards in 1973-4. I believe it was made by Mossberg because I have ordered a replacement stock and barrel for a Mossberg 500 that fit perfectly. Your serial no is higher, so I'm guessing it was manufactured at a later date. .
