Trying to find serial numbers for a western field shotgun would prove to be very difficult.There were many makers of shotguns for the montgomery wards company.some of these include mossberg,savage,stevens,and noble.It would be best if you include the western field model number of your shotgun and then we can convert that number to the original maker of your shotgun.Then we would be able to find the makers model number.You must remeber that prior to the gun control act of 1968 weapons were not required to have serial numbers on them.
Check the barrel and receiver.
As a long time collector and shooter I believe that .22 cal rifles and shotguns of all guages are not required to have serial numbers. Model numbers and manufacturers names will appear as well as calibers , but no serial numbers. JS

Western Field 16 gauge double barrel shotguns were manufactured by several companies, primarily by the Stevens Arms Company and later by the Mossberg company. These shotguns were sold under the Western Field brand, which was a private label used by the Montgomery Ward department store. The firearms were known for their affordability and reliability in the mid-20th century.

There is no serial number, the rifle was made before serial numbers were used, Mossberg did not commonly use serial numbers, when they did use them it was like for the model 44's etc. as military trainers.
If you cannot easily see a serial number, then it was manufactured prior to 1968 and doesn't have one.
