By US law, firearms must have serial numbers. The part legally considered the firearm is the receiver for a long arm and the frame for a pistol, and that is where the number would be. There are a few special cases, like the FN-FAL and AR-15 designs, which use upper and lower receivers. For the FAL, the firearm is the upper, for the AR, it is the lower.

Guns made prior to 1968 may not be numbered at all, particularly if they were made by a small company.
