how to install a spring clutch on a murray mower
The idler pulley is located just in front of and to the left of the right-side mower pulley. It's mounted on a bracket which has a long spring attached from it to the front of the mower deck. You can see a good diagram of this at www.partsandservice.com/html/Murray/lt/lt42910x92a.html and click on "mower housing". The belt is Murray part # 37X75 which translates to 1/2" wide by 91.25" around. Any larger mower shop would have this or an aftermarket equivilant.
To install the idler spring on a 38-inch mower deck, first, ensure the mower is turned off and disconnected from power. Locate the idler pulley and the spring mounting points on the deck. Attach one end of the spring to the idler arm and the other end to the designated anchor point on the mower deck, ensuring it's securely in place. Finally, check the tension and adjust if necessary to ensure proper operation.
On a Ranch King lawn mower, the spring for the tension pulley typically attaches to a fixed point on the mower frame or deck and connects to the tension pulley itself. This setup allows the spring to provide the necessary tension to ensure proper operation of the mower's drive belt. Always refer to the owner's manual for specific diagrams and attachment points for your particular model.
Hard to explain.. youtube has instructional videos.... daividsfarm has mower repair vids along with other users
How do I replace starter cord on lawn mower? Remove the engine starter cover or blower housing which contains the starter rope. Check to see if the spring is still good then just rewind the starter rope pulley to re-tension the spring. Insert the replacement rope into pulley as originally routed and let the spring wind the rope back into pulley. Then replace the starter handle. Make sure you keep tension on the starter pulley while the rope is winding.
HOW TO CHANGE THE CUTTING HEIGHT To change the cutting height, raise or lower the lift lever as follows. 1. Move the lift lever forward to lower the mower housing and back to raise the mower housing. 2. When you ride on a sidewalk or road, move the lift lever to the highest position and move the blade rotation control to the DISENGAGE position.
instructional vids on youtube... remove air filter & you should see a spring
from the factory the speed is set and cannot be changed, unless you disconnect the coil spring. You can latch the spring somewhere on the housing at your desired speed. this speed is determined by the distance away from the idle stop. example, you can reverse the spring to move stiff lower spring up against the idle stop screw. then using a screwdriver turn the idle screw in to achieve your desired speed.
there is a lever associated with the choke. when the engine needs more power the choke moves to the closed position. There is a governor spring attached to the lever. If this spring is shortened the choke will not be able to move back to full open. This is not recommended though. I did it last fall for the last cut of the year. Sparks were flying from the starter housing flywheel and I used two tanks of gas for a very small yard, normally I get by with about 3/4 of a tank. The mower sure was screaming though. This lever can usually be located by looking down between the starter housing and the air filter.
weak spring, dirt, and the gears are plastic and they get chewed up and jam.
I recently replaced my springs. There is a shorter one that's closer to the engine and a longer one that goes at a diagonal. The problem I'm having is that they seem to stretch out quickly so they don't really work efficiently. I'm looking for the owner's manual PDF (again) online and I'll post it here when I find it.
