I have same gun. Made worcester mass.. Became forehand firearms after 1890.
Forehand and Wadsworth (Forehand Arms) was in business from 1871 to 1902. Unfortunately, there are no serial number records for this company that has been closed for 116 years.
Made late 1800s to early 1900s. Inexpensive when made.
late 1800's to ealry 1900's
You have not yet asked a question, despite the question mark. The successor to the Forehand & Wadsworth Company, Forehand firearms were made from 1890 to 1902. Values are not high, but would depend on exact model and condition. Please note this is NOT a .38 Special, but a caliber .38 S&W.
Forehand and Wadsworth was established in 1871. In 1890 the name was changed to Forehand Arms Company. They made several models of revolvers, both large and small frame and some shotguns. Most of these were small mail order type firearms which sold for only a few dollars { 2.98$ } In 1899 Forehand was taken over by Hopkins and Allen who continued to manufacture many of the same models, changing only the markings. H&A stopped operations in 1915.
They began making guns in 1871, name changed to Forehand Arms in 1890, and company was sold in about 1901. Any parts available would be salvalged from other guns, or hand made by a true gunsmith. A LIMITED amount of parts for SOME guns may be available from Numrich. Check their website undergunpartscorp. Sorry-
If the pistol is in MInt condition it may be worth around $250-300. Those breaktop revolvers made around that time were made cheaply and nearly every manufacturer of guns made them. they do not command high premiums and are generally higher valued when included in a collection of pistols from that era.
It would just be called a Forehand Arms Single Shot.
1881-1904
Forehand & Wadsworth of Worcester Mass. Was in operation from 1871 to 1890. They were mostly known for their handguns. They made a couple models of derringers, and several models of full size and pocket revolvers. The most popular of the Forehand & Wadsworth revolvers at the time were the brand name guns they made; Terror, Swamp Angel, and American Bulldog.Forehand & Wadsworth did make a couple other guns though, a falling block type rifle, some side-by-side shotguns, and the pictured single shot shotgun.Due to it's uniqueness, and somewhat obscurity, I would give this shotgun a value of somewhere in the neighborhood of $200. If the right collector needs this particular piece to round out a collection it may fetch as much as $400.
Look on the internet for Forehand and Wadsworth. Your gun was made between 1871 and 1890 (assuming the grips are original to the rest of the gun).
Doing some research myself on this subject and have only been able to determine that the company was named Forehand from 1890 to 1902. It had originally been named Forehand & Wadsworth, and was renamed when Wadsworth retired. It was sold be the family in 1902 to Hopkins & Allen. Sorry this only gives a rough date, but so far this is all I have found. The first answer narrows the date of manufacture down to a 13 year period, and that is a pretty small window for an old gun. All I can add is that if they were still using leftover F&W grips, it was probably made fairly early in this period. Unfortunately, this is not enough to get an antique designation from the ATF since the model was still being made after 12/31/1898 and there are no records to prove which side of that arbitrary date yours was manufactured.
