An automatic shotgun is still a shotgun. Technically they are semi-automatic. A fully automatic 12 gauge, if they exist, would beat the living crap out of you. Autos may be slightly heavier, may jam more often and they lack the intimidation factor you give off while pumping a shotgun in front of an intruder. Of course autos reload faster, they are more expensive and I wouldn't own a pump because of personal preference.

Hatsan Arms Company now has A semi Auto Shotgun which has A stop auto load button on the side of the receiver,, this can be used in two ways, 1 it can b a extra safety feature for those guys a little nervous over the next shell auto loading.. and 2 it can be used similar as a pump action when pressed since you have to use the slide to chamber the next shell. look close at this pic in the large view and you will see what i mean (see related link) nice new feature for a shot gun

Fully automatic shotguns do exist, though they are a bit of a rarity. One downside of automatic and semi-automatic shotguns is that there several loads which do not generate enough pressure to cycle the weapon - typically, these would be specialised loads, such as riot control rounds. Which is why Franchi developed the SPAS-12, which can be operated as a semi auto or a pump action shotgun.
