It depends on the model number. On the side, it should have something like 583.56. If it's 583.xx, then it's most likely a Hi Standard. If it's 101.xx, then it was made by Savage Arms. This site is useful for looking up the model number:

No matter who made it, it's a well made utility gun. I got mine when my Grandmother passed on. It had sat in her attic for over 20 years, oiled and in an English soft showgun cover. I took it home, cleaned it up, and it's fired perfectly ever since. Another 15 years later and I'm teaching my kids how to shoot, although this gun is too big for them. But ol' Dad can still hit 'em with his Higgins!
It is not recommended to shoot slugs with a power pack chock on a JC Higgins model.
1956
1957 more likely 1961

The value of a JC Higgins model 2012 gauge 583.59 is $250.
Measure it, or have a gunsmith measure it, with a choke gauge.
A 1953 JC Higgins shotgun 12 gauge model 20 pump is values at about $150. It was sold by Sears Roebuck.
what is a. jc Higgins pump shot gun. model 20-12 gauge worth??
When was the J.C. Higgins Model 101.0 12Gauge Shotgun Made
You don't give us the model, so it is hard to answer the question. Assuming the gun does not have an obvious adjustable choke, the choke is probably not easily adjustable. A gunsmith can open the choke (from Full to Modified for example) or can install internal interchangeable choke tubes (costs around $125).
Stevens made jc Higgins shotguns ,the model 311 interchanges with the jc Higgins
The Winchester 140 12 gauge has a choke barrel at 28". This is the same choke size as the 20 gauge model.
