It's a 16 gauge shot gun I have the same one and I recommend using the lighter factory loads.

I know that 8 gauges are made, but I'me sure that there are specialty guns that are in even larger gauges.
being that your savage/stevens shotgun was made between 1933-1945,I would have a gunsmith check your shotgun to make sure it is safe to use and at that time question him on use of steel shot through your shotgun.
I am pretty sure that it is modeled after the mosberg. That is how i order parts for mine.
If no serial numbers are present,than you can be sure that it was made prior to 1969.Other than that I cannot say.
