M16 is the military designation for the AR-15 rifle developed by Eugene Stoner during his time at ArmaLite.
If the rifle has M16 stamped on it, it is an M16. The letter "M" simply stands for MILITARY MODEL even though it's only 1 letter "M"-16. AR stood for the company that originally built the rifle, the Armalite company.
The armalite gun company
The M16 assault rifle originated as the AR-15, designed by Eugene Stoner (1922-1997) at ArmaLite in 1957. The AR-15 itself was a scaled down version of the 7.62mm AR-10. ArmaLite sold the design of the AR-15 to Colt, which submitted the rifle to the United States military command for testing. It was subsequently adopted into service in 1963 as the M16.
The filipino inventor that invented the Armalite A15 or M16
The M16, a 5.56x45mm assault rifle, is based on the AR-15 rifle originally designed by Eugene Stoner, and produced by ArmaLite. Upon entering service with the United States armed forces, the M16 name was adopted, and the contract to build these rifles was given to Colt's Manufacturing Company. Since then Fabrique Nationale d'Herstal (FNH), H&R Firearms, the General Motors Hydramatic Division, and Sabre Defence have also built the M16 rifle for the U.S. military.
There is no difference between an AR rifle and an AR rifle
