Since this question asks for an opinion, I believe people should own a gun for self-defense. Just to be specific, I don't believe self-defense means "he-tried-to-hurt-me-so-I-shot-him-dead"; self-defense is to protect yourself and stop that other person from causing harm. If you killed someone who was about to cause harm or injury, it'd probably be best to give them what they deserve. Killing is a coward's way. But like I said, I might be the only one in the whole world who thinks that.

It is not just the person who wants protection who might need to own a gun. Police and members of the military also need to be armed as part of their duties. Another reason for owning a gun is for certain sports like hunting. (This too is controversial, since not everyone believes in hunting.) But for those who enjoy this sport, knowing how to shoot is necessary. Similarly, there are a number of sports which involve competitive shooting, where participants shoot at various targets and try to be the most accurate. While I am not a fan of guns, I respect those who own one, and I know that contrary to news stories about crime, most people who own a gun use it responsibly, whether for protection or for sport.
