Finding it is perfectly legal. POSSESSING one is a different matter, depending on just how "sawed off" it is. In the US, shotguns must have a barrel length of at least 18 inches, AND an overall length of 26 inches. Shotguns shorter than that are classed as "Short Barreled Shotguns" (abbreviated as SBS). If not registered with the Federal BATFE as a Class III firearm, possessing one is punished by 10 years in a Federal prison, a fine of $10,000. If not already registered, and the transfer tax of $200 paid, it CANNOT be registered, and must be surrendered to the BATFE for destruction. If it is longer than those dimensions, it does not violate the National Firearms Act.
